    The purpose of this research was to demonstrate the applicability of expert systems to the domain of satellite command and control, specifically, NAVSTAR Global Positioning System anomaly resolution. A prototype expert system was developed which successfully diagnoses many Attitude, Velocity and Control Subsystem and Electrical Power Subsystem anomalies.     Costimulatory blockade: A novel approach to the treatment of glomerular disease?

    Costimulatory pathways (Cluster of differentiation 28, tumor necrosis factor-related, adhesion and T Cell Ig- and mucin-domain molecules) regulating the interactions between receptors on the T cells and their ligands expressed on several cell types, have a key role in controlling many immunological and non immunological processes. Indeed, accumulating evidence indicate that these molecules are involved in the pathogenesis of numerous conditions, such as allograft rejection, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and renal diseases, including glomerulonephritis. Primary or secondary (i.e., associated with infections, drugs or systemic diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, diabetes, etc.) glomerulonephritis represent a group of heterogeneous diseases with different pathogenic mechanisms. Since costimulatory molecules, in particular CD80 and CD40, have been found to be expressed on podocytes in the course of different experimental and clinical glomerulonephritis, costimulation has been thought as a new therapeutic target for patients with glomerular diseases. However, although experimental data suggested that the blockade of costimulatory pathways is effective and safe in the prevention and treatment of glomerular diseases, clinical trials reported contrasting results. So, at this moment, there is not a strong evidence for the general use of costimulatory blockade as an alternative treatment strategy in patients with primary or secondary glomerulonephritis. Here, we critically discuss the current data and the main issues regarding the development of this innovative therapeutic approach

    Nutraceuticals and their role in tumor angiogenesis

    Angiogenesis plays a pivotal role in cancer initiation, maintenance, and progression. Diet may inhibit, retard or reverse these processes affecting angiogenesis (angioprevention). Nutraceuticals, such as omega-3 fatty acids, amino acids, proteins, vitamins, minerals, fibers, and phenolic compounds, improve health benefits as they are a source of bioactive compounds that, among other effects, can regulate angiogenesis. The literature concerning the pro-angiogenic and/or anti-angiogenic nutraceuticals and the possible activated pathways in cancer and other non-neoplastic diseases by in vivo and in vitro experiments are reviewed

    Microlensing and the Search for Extraterrestrial Life

    Are microlensing searches likely to discover planets that harbor life? Given our present state of knowledge, this is a difficult question to answer. We therefore begin by asking a more narrowly focused question: are conditions on planets discovered via microlensing likely to be similar to those we experience on Earth? In this paper I link the microlensing observations to the well-known "Goldilocks Problem" (conditions on the Earth-like planets need to be "just right"), to find that Earth-like planets discovered via microlensing are likely to be orbiting stars more luminous than the sun. This means that light from the planetary system's central star may contribute a significant fraction of the baseline flux relative to the star that is lensed. Such blending of light from the lens with light from the lensed source can, in principle, limit our ability to detect these events. This turns out not to be a significant problem, however. A second consequence of blending is the opportunity to determine the spectral type of the lensed spectral type of the lensed star. This circumstance, plus the possibility that finite-source-size effects are important, implies that some meaningful follow-up observations are likely to be possible for a subset Earth-like planets discovered via microlensing. In addition, calculations indicate that reasonable requirements on the planet's density and surface gravity imply that the mass of Earth-like planets is likely to be within a factor of ∼15\sim 15 of an Earth mass.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures.     Involvement of vascular endothelial growth factor in schizophrenia

    Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which acts as an angiogenic and neurotrophic factor, is involved the regulation of cerebral blood volume and flow in Schizophrenia (SCZ). Several evidence indicates that modification of brain blood circulation due to alterations in the VEGF system affects cognitive performance and brain function in patients with SCZ. The aim of this study is: 1) To analyze the literature data concerning the role of VEGF in modulating the angiogenic response in SCZ. These data are controversial because some studies found elevated VEGF serum levels of VEGF in patients with SCZ, whereas others demonstrated no significant differences between SCZ patients and controls. 2)To analyze the role of VEGF as a predictive factor on the effects of antipsychotics agents used in the treatment of SCZ. In this context, high VEGF levels, associated to better responses to antipsychotics, might be predictive of the use of first generation antipsycotic drugs, whereas low VEGF levels, expression of resistance to therapy, might be predictive for the use of second generation antipsycotic drugs

    Strategies for Psychiatric Rehabilitation and their Cognitive Outcomes in Schizophrenia: Review of Last Five-year Studies

    Background: Cognitive deficits are core features of Schizophrenia, showing poor response to antipsychotic treatment, therefore non-pharmacological rehabilitative approaches to such a symptom domain need to be identified. However, since not all patients with Schizophrenia exhibit the same cognitive impairment profile, individualized rehabilitative approaches should be set up. Objectives: We explored the last five-year literature addressing the issue of cognitive dysfunction response to rehabilitative methodologies in Schizophrenia to identify possible predictors of response and individualized strategies to treat such a dysfunction. Conclusion: A total of 76 studies were reviewed. Possible predictors of cognitive rehabilitation outcome were identified among patient-specific and approachspecific variables and a general overview of rehabilitative strategies used in the last five years has been depicted. Studies suggest the existence of multifaced and multi-domain variables that could significantly predict pro-cognitive effects of cognitive rehabilitation, which could also be useful for identifying individual-specific rehabilitation trajectories over time. An individualized rehabilitative approach to cognitive impairment in Schizophrenia is possible if taking into account both patient and approach specific predictors of outcomes

    Chemical promenades: Exploring potential-energy surfaces with immersive virtual reality

    The virtual-reality framework AVATAR (Advanced Virtual Approach to Topological Analysis of Reactivity) for the immersive exploration of potential-energy landscapes is presented. AVATAR is based on modern consumer-grade virtual-reality technology and builds on two key concepts: (a) the reduction of the dimensionality of the potential-energy surface to two process-tailored, physically meaningful generalized coordinates, and (b) the analogy between the evolution of a chemical process and a pathway through valleys (potential wells) and mountain passes (saddle points) of the associated potential energy landscape. Examples including the discovery of competitive reaction paths in simple A + BC collisional systems and the interconversion between conformers in ring-puckering motions of flexible rings highlight the innovation potential that augmented and virtual reality convey for teaching, training, and supporting research in chemistry
